Abkhazia's speaker: Minsk's position is open trade
Natela Akaba, the head of Abkhazia's public chamber, has described Minsk's position in the question of recognizing the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as an "open trade". The Belarusian parliament received an official request from the self-declared republics to recognize them as independent states in early December 2008. However, the Belarusian authorities have delayed a decision on this issue despite the pressure from Russia, reports Nasha Abkhazia.
Before Belarus was accepted into the Eastern Partnership program, EU had called on Minsk not to recognize the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Some analysts suggest that the leadership of Belarus will have made this step eventually but not earlier than the next fall.
