Four Belarus Army servicemen committed suicide in 2018. The number includes two conscripts and two contracted warrant officers, Defense Ministry's spokesman Uldzimir Makarau told Euroradio.

Information about three out of those four suicide cases was published in the media. On 6 September, Private Aliaksandr Arlou was found hanging in the military unit No33933 in Slonim. Two days later, on 8 September, the body of 26-year-old conscript soldier Siarhei Yasyukevich was found in a forest near Hrodna. On 22 June 2018, Warrant Officer Aliaksei Segadnyou committed suicide in one of the units of the Polack guarrison.


Mr Makarau refused to elaborate on the fourth case - the death of a contracted warrant officer. "We are not disclosng. It [suicide - Euroradio] happened during the off-duty hours at home. Family matters were the cause," he said.

In 2017, 5 servicemen committed sucide. The number also includes the high-profile case of Private Aliaksandr Korzych, which was heard in a court since August 2018. Three sergeants - Yauhen Baranouski, Anton Vyazhevich and Yahor Skuratovich - were found guilty of the incitement to suicide. They were sentenced to 9, 7 and 6 years in prison, correspondingly
