2 in 10 women refuse from abortion after consultation with expert

Chief doctor at the gynecological hospital in Minsk Aliaksandr Bic supports the proposed legislation.

“We have already had this practice in place in some of gynecological wards in Minsk. Priests, psychologists and gynecologists talk to women. It will be just great if it is introduced across Belarus," notes the doctor.

Aliaksandr Bic even gives some statistics regarding this practice. He says tww or three women out of ten refuse from the abortion operation!

"And they leave being still pregnant. A woman should be given a possibility to think everything through and make her own judgements," says the gynecologist.

In doctor's opinion, such practice can help reduce the number of abortions in the country. He is totally supportive about the legislation.

The proposed draft also envisages that doctors are entitled to refusing from performing the abortion operation. To do so, a doctor is required to give his written refusal from abortion and only in the event that such refusal does not pose a threat to the woman's health or life.

The gynecologhist says he declines to comment on this particular aspect of the proposed legislation, citing the delicate nature of the issue.

"When two doctors out of 100 refuse, where will a woman go for abortion, because she is entitled to such an operation by law? She will go to grannies! That will do greater damage to her health. I am aware that many doctors will refuse to carry our the abortion. Myself, I have not performed abortion for seven years. This is a very controvertial issue that I am not yet ready to comment on."
