13:10 Petkevic says people do not disappear in Belarus

The Convenstion on Forceful Disaperances does not apply to Belarus, said the influential deputy heaf of the Office of the Belarus President, Natallja Petkevic, when talking to reporters at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

"The Belarus Ministry of Foreign Affairs will not treat this convention as a priority... We do not have such a problem in Belarus," Ms Petkevic stressed..


Meanwhile, the UN top officials described the Convention as one of the main achievements in the field of human rights and freedoms last year

The UN General Assembly in November 2006 condemned Belarus for human rights violations and urged the official Minsk to find those responsible for the disapperances of the opposition politicians in this country
.

Under the Convention, forceful disappearances can be treated as the crimes against humanity and be subjected to the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court
