12:30 450th birthday anniversary of Leo Sapega

April 4 is the 450th birthday anniversary of Leo Sapega, the Chancellor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The famous Belarusian was born in 1557 in the village of Astrouna in the Besankovicy district of the Vicebsk region in Belarus. Chancellor Sapega gained fame for passing the Third Statues of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, setting out a wider autonomy of our country in the framework of the then Polish state and declaring the old Belarusian language as the state tongue of the country.

According to Aleg Trusau who chairs the Belarusian Language Society, he received official responds from the authorities in Vicebsk and Brest, regarding his proposals to commemorate this big day in the Belarusian history.

The answers revealed that a memorial sign was installed to Sapega in his native village. Other activities were also planned in Vicebsk region.

In Brest region, a memorial sign is to be erected in the town of Ruzany, which hosts a palace built for Leo Sapega.  Other activities include the launch of Sapega's exposition at the local museum, performances with the participation of knight clubs, and several programs to be devoted to the renowned Belarusian on the regional television channel.
