12:01 Lukashou released on suspended sentence

A court in Minsk has sentenced Kanstancin Lukashou, a public activist, to two years of suspended prison term and to a fine of Br1 million to be paid to the plaintiff, a police officer.

Lukashou was accused of riding with his vehicle over a police officer last March. Kanstancin rejects the charges, saying that he was helping his brother Viacaslau Siucyk, an opposition activist, to escape from police.

"The trial against me could even stand the existing legal framework, created by the government to repress the dissent. Even this framework was unsufficient for an allegedly fair trial..

Everything was done to put limitations on my public activities and to prevent me from running for a seat at the House of Representatives. Generally, now they want me to walk on the streets, fearing to be faced again with administartive prosecution," Lukashou told the European Radio for Belarus right after the release.

The activist has spent two months and one day behind bars, awaiting the trial.
