UN General Assembly condemns human rights abuses in Belarus

The UN General Assembly approved a resolution to condemn the human rights violations in Belarus, with 72 countries voting in favor, 33 voting against and 78 nations abstaining.
The list of countries that voted against the resolution includes Russia, Cuba, North Korea, Iran, Syria, Sudan, Zimbabwe and others. In respond, the US ambassador in the United Nations called Belarus "the last dictatorship in Europe", reports Telegraf.

The resolution condemns human rights abuses in Belarus, pointing to the repeated violations of human rights, harassement of the media, opposition  and human rights activists.

The resolution says that the March 19, 2006 presidential elections in Belarus did not meet Belarus's obligations in the framework of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe as regards the standards of free and fair elections, reports Charter'97.
