Social democratic party activist detained in Mahilyou

The police in Mahilyou today in the morning detained Mikalai Rasyuk, a member of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Hramada), when he was heading for a Labor Day action. A uniformed police officer and two plainclothes agents stopped Rasyuk near Lenin Square in the city center and told him to follow them to a district police station.

Radio Svaboda reports that Mikalai Rasyuk took part in the 1986 clean-up effort after the deadly accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. He was detained on April 26 for trying to stage an unauthorized picket in defense of the victims of the accident.
