Shooting in downtown Minsk

A young man has opened fire on Turkmen students in downtown Minsk and later on police officers who attempted to arrest him, BelaPAN reported.

On the evening of October 16, the man approached a group of first-year students of Belarusian National Technical University and threatened them with two air guns, demanding money. He fired at the group several times and made four shots at arriving police who were called by passers-by.

The incident occurred on Yakub Kolas Street near a building of the Savetski district police department.
No one was injured; but one policeman had a bullet brush past his head, Volha Yaskevich, spokesperson for the district police department, told BelaPAN.

The 19-year-old man was released from prison several months earlier under this year’s amnesty law. He has previous convictions for theft and robbery.
