Scandal: Cuban runner escapes from his delegation in Moscow
Orlando Ortega took part in the track and field world championship in the Russian capital.
However, the Cuban athlete stopped struggling for medals at the qualification stage. Besides, he was a finalist at London Olympics 2012 in 110 m hurdles.
According to RIA Novosti, Orlando Ortega managed to escape from the Cuban delegation. His whereabouts are unknown.
The Cuban Track and Field Federation calls the escaped runner a "traitor". "Such behaviour has nothing in common with the principles that inspire us," the statement says. "This is unacceptable, especially for those people who are convinced that loyalty to one's country is an essential component of any national sport."
