Ukraine decides on language issue: Rada speaker signs scandalous draft bill
Uladzimir Litvin signed the law which expands use of the Russian language as "Supreme Council Chairman has just obligations, but no rights".
Now the law "On principles of the state language policy" has been forwarded to Victor Yanukovich. If the President of Ukraine signs it, it will come into force since next year.
In the opinion of the authorities' opponents, Uladzimir Litvin became an accessory of the crime by signing the "language law", informs Radio Liberty. However, the day before, at the pre-term session of the Supreme Council, the pro-presidential majority refused to vote for cancellation of this law and turned down Litvin's application for resigning. The Speaker filed it after confirmation of the document on July 3.
The Party of the Regions frightened Litvin with court trial many times if he does not sign the "language law". Its adoption was accompanied by fights in the Parliament and provoked street protests all over the country.
