Minsk Square action-2010 recalled in U.S. Congress
The event was dedicated to the anniversary of the brutal dispersal of the 30-thousand peaceful demonstration in Minsk in 2010.
Chairman of the U.S.
Helsinki Commission in the U.S. Congress Christopher Smith made a speech there,
reports "Voice of America". The Congressman thinks that in order to change
the situation with violation of human rights in Belarus, the world leaders
should systematically draw attention to the subject. Smith also said that
Belarus leader Alyaksandr Lukashenka must stand trial in the International
Criminal Court in the Hague for the crimes against humanity.
The head of the Helsinki Commission considers that the U.S. government should
increase support of the Belarusian civil society and human rights defenders.
Smith admires their bravery and urges to continue their struggle against
repressions.
Chairperson of the Belarusian Association of Journalists Zhanna Litvina,
President of the Belarusian Human Rights House Tatsyana Ravyaka and wife of the
political prisoner Ales Byalyatski Natallya Pinchuk arrived from Belarus to
take part in the event. Pinchuk underlined the importance of the common
position of the EU member states and the United States with regard to the
situation in Belarus.
