European Parliament urges to release Ales Byalyatski

MEPs address to the official Minsk with an appeal to release the human rights defender immediately and unconditionally. They also demand to withdraw all accusations and to stop the investigation against him, BelaPAN informs.

The European Parliament adopted the corresponding resolution in Strasbourg on September 15. The MEPs also condemned inability of the Belarusian authorities to respect fundamental rights for freedom of gatherings and freedom of speech.

The European Parliament urges the Council of the EU, the European Commission and the European Commissioner Catherine Ashton to increase pressure on the Belarusian authorities and to expand the list of visa and financial sanctions. In the opinion of the MEPs, the sanctions should concern participants of arrest and persecution of Ales Byalyatski.
