European greens unanimously condemn Belarusian NPP project

The hearing about Astravets NPP in Kiev lasted 30 minutes longer than planned. However, they stuck to the time-limit and everyone who was interested including representatives of the International Ecological Expertise from Belarus and Russia managed to make a speech. On the whole, the Ukrainian ecological community gave a negative account of the Belarusian NPP project.

In Ukrainian ecologists’ opinion, the project presented by atomic scientists had a lot of crucial drawbacks. The head of the organization “Ecoclub” from Rouna Andrei Martynyuk has informed ERB about it.

Andrei Martynyuk: “It is just a brief technical summary while the complete variant is unavailable for the public. The project lacks a number of important articles. It does not inform what Belarus is going to do with nuclear waste and spent fuel.  Nothing is said about the way it will be taken out of service. However, these three issues are the most important. These are the things that do most harm during the exploitation of the station and it’s closing down”.

Participants of the hearing were also indignant at the fact that the possible waste of Astravets NPP was underestimated by the authors of the project by several times. Furthermore, the reactor is experimental.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Environmental Protection has promised that it will collect all the remarks pronounced at the hearing with the help of the civil community and send them to Belarus. Andrei Martynyuk has stressed that ecologists from the European Union expressed their protest together with Ukrainians.

Andrei Martynyuk: “A resolution of the European greens was also pronounced there. They unanimously protested against the plan of the construction of the Belarusian NPP. The resolution was presented to representatives of the Ukrainian party of the greens so that it would be taken into account alongside with other comments”.
Let us remind you that the previous hearing about the Belarusian NPP that took place in Astravets, Vilnius and Riga ended with a scandal and criticism of the project of the NPP pronounced by independent experts.
