Egypt elects new President
This is Mohammed Mursi, the leader of the Islamist movement "Muslim Brotherhood".
Former Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq, who
used to be a PM at the times of ex-President Hosni
Mubarak, was Mursi's rival in the second round of the election, ВВС informs. According to the
information of the Egyptian CEC, a 60-year-old Mursi got 51,7% of votes while
Shafiq got 48,3%.
Announcement of the election's results was broadcasted live in the Tahrir
Square in Cairo, thousand of demonstrants listened to it. The news about
Mursi's victory was greeted with cries of joy.
Mohammed Mursi got the education of an engineer in the United States. He was an
independent member of the Egyptian Parliament since 2000 till 2005. After the
downfall of Mubarak's regime in January, 2011 Mursi was elected as a Chairman
of the Party of Freedom and Justice, created by the movement "Muslim
Brotherhood".
During his electoral campaign, Mursi promised to facilitate unity in the Egyptian society and to increase the citizens' well-being.
