Declaration of Belarusian sovereignty was adopted 21 years ago

According to the Declaration, Belarus was announced an independent state, which is based on self-identification, state status of the Belarusian language, supremacy of people in definition of their own destiny. The highest aim of the sovereignty, according to the Declaration, was granting free development and well-being of the citizens of the Republic. Belarusian people were announced carriers of the country's independence and the only source of state power.

July 27 used to be the Independence Day in the first years of independence. However, Aliaksandr Lukashenka transferred the holiday to July 3 - the day of Minsk's liberation from the Nazi.
