Protesters against benefit cuts detained in Mahiliou

Civil and political activists in Mahiliou on May 22 staged an action to protest against the abolishment of social benefits. 10 young people, including 3 journalists, were detained by police.
The youth came out to the central pedestrian street to stage a protest against the legislation on "regulating the social benefits". The students were gathering signatures against the legislation and dissiminating the human rights bulletin The Right to Freedom.

The detainees were held in a local police station for about a hour and later released.

Police used severe force to carry out the detentions. Siargej Hirkin, an invalid, received body injuries when policemen were pulling his hands. He is set to undergo a medical expertise and sue the police officers, reports Hanna Paliakova, ERB correspondent in Mahiliou.
