Political prisoner Dashkevich fined with Br1,860,000

A Belarus court has ruled to fine political prisoner Zmitser Dashkevich with 60 base rates or Br1,860,000 ($900). The trial took place on November 9 in a correctional facility in Shklou where the youth leader is serving his 18-months term. Only his lawyer and OSCE representatives were admitted to the trial. Dashkevich was accused of refusing to testify against his fellow members of the Malady Front youth group. He potentially faced a fresh term of 6 months in prison.

Dashkevich's lawyer Aliaksandr Halieu told the European Radio for Belarus that the prosecutor asked for a fine of 100 base rates. But the judge ruled that Dashkevich pay 60 base rates.

Former political prisoner Pavel Sevyarynets was in front of the colony's building to support the jailed youth leader. He told the European Radio for Belarus that the verdict was influenced by the position of Europe. He expressed hope that Dashkevich was to be freed on March 15, 2008.
