Orthodox church leader pushes for China-style internet regulation

Metropolitan Philareth of Minsk and Slutsk, the leader of the Orthodox Church in Belarus, has proposed to follow the Chinese example in introducing a legal framework for the regulation of the Internet. The Metropolitan voiced his proposals when meeting Belarus leader Alexander Lukashenka on Friday.

He reckons that China's experience is interesting for Belarus, because it stipulates legal responsibility for internet service providers, not the state.

In the view of the Metropolitan, Internet has a huge influence on people's minds. But the main threat is that amoral information has become available to children and teenagers who hav a vulnerable strength of minds.
