Official in Hrodna region gets 4 years in prison for graft
A former head of the culture department at the Vaukavysk district executive committee in the Hrodna region has been sentenced to four years in jail for accepting a bribe. Her property has also been confiscated by the state. The press center of the Prosecutor General said a criminal case against the former official was opened by the Hrodna regional prosecutor's office under Article 430 (receiving a bribe) in the Penal Code of Belarus.
Investigators determined that in October 2007 she was approached by an entrepreneur who requested her to assist in renting a warehouse owned by the culture department. She later convinced the managers of the warehouse and various officials at the local town hall to approve this renting contract.
For this assistance, she received a mobile phone worth Br290,000 and $1000 as a bribe, reports AFN.
