No Car Day for Belarusians

The Transport Ministry of Belarus plans to stage an action titled "No Car Day" in 2008, Mikhail Verkhavets, the first deputy transport minister said in a statement.
During the action, drivers will be encouraged to refrain from using their vehicles for one day and to switch to the public transport instead.

Verkhavets noted that different from West European countries, Belarus had not staged similar events before.

No Car Day is believed to help improve environment in the country and to reduce congestion on the roads.

At the same time, the deputy minister admitted that public transport in Minsk and regional center could be overcrowded during the action, reports Interfax.
