Motorists collect signatures against car tax in Belarus

The fee is expected to be collected effective from Janaury 1, 2014. By the evening of December 14, over 12500 people signed against plans to introduce the car tax at the online petition platform www.change.org. People put their signatures under the letter to Belarus' finance minister Andrei Kharkavets, reports Belapan.

The appeal reads: "Since the fuel excise cost already includes the amount for road repairs, we deem it unreasonable to introduce a new duty. This draft does not take into account the fact that some motorists use their vehicles extremely rarely. However, the draft equals them to those who use their vehicles permanently and also for commercial purposes. The draft does not take into account the fact that after purchasing a vehicle and when passing a technical inspection procedure, owners will again have to pay the duty, despite the fact that the previous owner pait it already."

The state duty on a permit to allow a vehicle to take part in road traffic may imply the amount equalt to 3-10 base rate. One base rate is currently Br130 000. The duty amount will depend on the maximum weight of the vehicle and on who is the owner.
