Mіlіnkevіch turns to European Council in protest against destruction of Hrodna

The leader of the movement “For Freedom” Alyaksandr Mіlіnkevіch has turned to Chair of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe René van der Linden and to Secretary General of the Council of Europe Tarry Davis and asked for help in the matter of preserving the historic and cultural legacy of Hrodna. “A threat to f the city centre as a historical and cultural complex appeared about two years ago. About 70 historic buildings are planned to be destroyed.

Construction works violating the Belarusian law on protection of the historic legacy are being performed. The basic rules of archeological work are not being followed, - is said in the appeal. – When the intellectual elite try to organize negotiations with the authorities in order to start a dialogue to find the best way to preserve the cultural heritage the response they get is police patrols, administrative measures and discrediting in the official mass media”.

Milinkevich proposes a wide-scale discussion of all reconstruction projects with participation of independent experts including specialists from European countries.
