Lazavіk: We can change to majority corporative system in spring

The leader of the Liberal-Democratic party Syarhei Haidukevіch claimed that it was possible to organize parliamentary elections according to the majority proportional system. Haidukevіch thinks that the Communist and Agrarian parties who already have representatives in the Parliament are interested in this system of election.

ERB asked the secretary of the Central Election Commission Mikalai Lazavіk to comment on it.

“It is the first time I have heard about it. However, the right to change the election system belongs to the legislator, that is the Parliament. Probably Mr. Haidukevіch got some new information. However, the Central Election Commission is unaware of any initiatives of changing the election system. It is news for us”.

According to Mikalai Lazavіk, the initiative may be suggested to the Parliament by a deputy or the President.

“Mr. Haidukevіch may propose it. It is necessary to work out amendments to the Election Code or create a new Election Code first. Then it is necessary to conduct an expertise and introduce the project to the House, then the Soviet of the Republic needs to approve it and the President has to sign it. The procedure is rather long but Mr. Haidukevich may be ready for it. If everything is ready we will be able to do it during the autumn-spring session”.
