Belarusian Іryna Ekpo-Uma was discharged from hospital in London on Monday, July 16. She was cured from malaria and her leg shot through by militants was treated there. As ERB informed, militants abducted Іryna Ekpo-Uma on the evening of May 5.
It happened in a Nigerian city Port Harcourt. The mother of four children had spent 11 days as a hostage until she was released. Right after the release she was taken to a London hospital by plane. Her leg was shot through and she was suffering from malaria and blood poisoning.

Iryna’s brother Aleh Hivoin told ERB that the woman’s daughter Rosalyn took her mother from hospital. The girl arrived in London from Minsk. She is studying in the Medical University in Belarus.

Aleh Hivoin: “She came to London, took her mother from hospital and went to Lagos”.

We asked: “Wasn’t she afraid of coming back to that tragic place?”, - Aleh answered that no abductions happen in Lagos, the city where the Ekpo-Umas live now.

The brother of the former hostage of Nigerian militants says that Iryna still has some health problems – the woman has to get about on crutches. But the company she is working for gave her vacations till the beginning of September.

According to Aleh Hivoin, there was no new information about the reasons for the abduction of Iryna or the terms of her release.

Aleh Hivoin: “She has not said anything about the reasons for the abduction. And we have never talked about the cost of her release. We stopped talking about it after the release. It’s the result that is important – she is free”.

ERB found out that Iryna was going to come to her motherland in August. According to her brother, the woman hopes to completely recover here. Aleh was laconic speaking about her other plans.

Aleh Hivoin: “The plans are to visit relatives”.
