France to build new sarcophagus over Chernobyl

Ukraine is going to sign an agreement on creation of a new protective cover over the fourth reactor in Chernobyl. The reactor was surrounded by a sarcophagus after the disaster in 1986.
The head of the Emergency Control Ministry of Ukraine Nestor Shufrich has informed about it. A French company “Novarka has been chosen as a contractor.

The sum of the contract is supposed to be about 490 million euro. The deal was approved by the Association of Chernobyl donor countries on July 17. G8, EU countries and Ukraine are members of the organization.

At the same time, a Ukrainian newspaper “Delo” informs that the money for the construction works at Chernobyl nuclear power plant has not been allocated yet.

According to the edition, the Association “promised to help with financing again, but did not allocate any money” at the meeting on July 18. The head of the Ukrainian Emergency Control Ministry was also present there.

The newspaper reports that the money will not be allocated earlier than in autumn 2007.
