Former prosecutor gets 9 years in prison for corruption

The Mahilou Regional Court today found Aliaksandr Dolya, former senuor prosecution officer at the department against corruption and organized crime at Homel Regional Prosecutor's Office, guilty of several penal offences: large-scale graft, swindling, office and power abuse.

Belapan reports that the former prosecutor was sentenced to nine years in a high-security prison and confiscation of his property. He was also fined the amount of Br75 million (approximately $7000) and banned from taking jobs in law-enforcement agencies for five years. Dolya was also deproved of the prrofessional title - junior counselor of justice.

Self-employed entrepreneur Artur Dudashenka was also convicted by the same court. He was found guilty of graft and swindling and sentenced to seven years in a high-security prison.

The pair will appeal the rulings in the Supreme Court of Belarus.
