European Parliament sets up support group for Belarusian political prisoner

The European Parliament has set up an informal group of trustees of Belarusian political prisoners. It includes six MEPs, BelaPAN reports.

According to Maryna Adamovich, wife of the former presidential candidate Mikalai Statkevich, each of Belarusian political prisoners found his patron among MEPs. MEPs will follow the fate of political prisoners and act in their defense and support.

Ms Adamovich recalled that the previous convocation of the European Parliament had a similar group where the greatest activity was shown by deputies Marek Migalski and Marie-Louise Beck.

The new group has arisen at the initiative of the human rights organization Freedom House and MEP from Lithuania Petras Austrevicius. The meeting with MEPs on May 12 was attended by relatives of Mikalai Statkevich, Ihar Alinevich,  Mikalai Dzyadok, Yury Rubtsou, Yauhen Vaskovich and Artsiom Prakapenka.

MEPs' first step was a symbolic act of solidarity - sending postcards in support of the political prisoners.
