Eternal flame to burn only on high days and holidays

Eternal flames are being switched to an anti-crisis mode in the provinces.
The eternal flame is not burning near the common grave of Soviet soldiers in Kamyanets. According to the head of the ideology department of Kamyanets District Executive Committee Iryna Niherysh, it is necessary to operate on a shoestring during the economic crisis:

"It burns on high days. This is not Brest Fortress anyway… However, we ask “CityGas” and they connect us on holidays (February 23, the Liberation Day, the Town Day). However, it does not burn for the whole day… Everyone has to operate on a shoestring during the economic crisis…”.

That is why gas counters are being installed at memorial complexes now. According to the head of the housing and communal services department of Homel Region Executive Committee Syarhei Kadola, the authorities are fulfilling the government’s order:

"New rules for natural gas usage were adopted by the government at the end of 2008. According to the rules, gas meters should be installed in all places of gas consumption”.

Homel gas meter will be installed only when the memorial complex is closed for reconstruction.

As ERB has found out, the eternal flame in Brest Fortress costs 5 thousand dollars a month. It used to be financed by “Gazprom”. However, the director of the complex “Brest Fortress - Hero” Valery Hubarenka says that no agreement has been signed this year.

Valery Hubarenka: “They used to pay for it last year but they have stopped doing it this year. We have no agreement for the next year. We have not tried to solve the problem yet and the Republic of Belarus used budget money to pay for gas. It pays for this gas and for this flame. It is about 5 thousand dollars a month”.

Minsk Central District has to pay about 4 million 740 thousand roubles for the eternal flame in Victory Square. The deputy head of the registration and meteorological equipment service of MinskGas Raisa Miranovich noted that MisnkGas sold gas to the administration of Central District at the same price as to any other enterprise.

In fact, there are many eternal flames that do not burn all the time in Minsk and that are lit only on high days.

Raіsa Mіranovіch: “There are eternal flames that are turned on only on Victory Day. They are lit and then turned off after the celebration”.
