Driver runs over young women in pedestrian way, gets jailed for 6 years

Homel Central District Court announced the sentence for the 22-year-old driver who ran over two young women in a pedestrian way. One of them, 20-year-old Alesya (in the photo), died of the injuries. Her friend Taisiya is still undergoing treatment.

The tragedy occurred on the evening of August 26, 2014. The young man was driving a Mazda Xedox 6 when he lost control of the car and drove into the pavement. He ran over pedestrians near a bus stop.

The driver violated the road rules – he was speeding and his car was disabled. The young man did not have a driving license. Witnesses said that his parents had lost control of their son due to helping him avoid punishment for various infringements.

The court has decided that the owner of the car who was sitting next to the driver at the moment of the accident will have to pay Br1.7 billion as a moral compensation to the deceased girl’s parents. The sentence has not come into force yet.

The driver will serve his sentence in colony.
