Demand for USD hits record high in Belarus

The demand for the US dollar in Belarus is $180.9 million against $127.6 million offered, according to the trend in the first half of July. This is the highest demand figure since early this year.
Despite a significant gap, the National Bank of Belarus has not rushed to liberate the exchange rate for USD in the country's banks and exchange bureaus. Meanwhile, Belarus has raised its gold and currency reserves at $717.9 million in June 2007 alone reaching almost $3 billion.

It was made possible due to the wire of $625 million received after the sale of 12.5 percent of Beltransgaz's shares to the Russian gas giant Gazprom, suggests Nasha Niva newspaper.
