December will be “Nobenefitscer” and January – “PUEcer”

ERB looked at this winter weather that seems to be warmer than usual and suggested that Belarusian literati invented new names for months because they no longer seemed to suit the weather. Mikalai Charhinets suggested a month of uniting peoples of Europe, Adam Globus – months of Adam and Eve and Victar Shalkevich suggested calling everything summer. January 2008 was not at all cold. The Belarusian hydremeteorological centre told ERB that it happened once in 7 years. December was also warm enough. The head of the weather forecasts department Dzmitry Pabau said that February, usually known as a very cold and frosty month, will be warm and spring-like.

Rabau: The first half of the month will be warm. There will be rains and sleet. Sometimes there will be icy conditions of roads. Night temperature will be from -3 to +3 and about 0 in the daytime.  On some days the temperature will reach +4 and +5 in Brest and Homel Regions.
The weather will be changeable in the second half of the month – it will be either warm or cold. 0…+5 in the daytime.

Thus, Belarusians will be able to feel effects of the global warming observed all over the world.

In connection with it ERB asked Belarusian literati to invent new names for winter months so that they corresponded to the weather.

A poet Leanid Dranko-Maisyuk said that changing the names was not a good idea but noted that it would be nice to add some adjectives.

Dranko-Maisyuk: This December turned out to be rather warm so we could call it December-in-love. January – kind January, February – tender February. Sad women and girls are waiting for their lovers in rooms lit with lamplight love March. So we could call it lamplight March.

A writer Adam Globus said that it was up to the Roman Emperor to rename months, but then he added that January could be called Adam and February – Eve. He even suggested a principle of giving new names to months.

Globus: the masculine and the feminine should be alternated. Equally.

He even suggested conducting a referendum dedicated to it.

A parliamentarian and the head of the official Union of Writers Mikalai Charhinets was very poetic and inventive. He suggested calling summer months “months of the beauty of the soul”. However, he didn’t stop there.

Charhinets: I would call one month a month of unity of European peoples taking into account that the weather in Europe and in Belarus is the same.

He also confessed that he liked the names of March and April very much.

A young Belarusian literary man Dzmitry Dzmitryeu has his own ideas and they are more up-to-date.

Dzmіtryeu: We could call December “Nobenefitscer” and January – “PUEcer” because private entrepreneurs were forced to change into private unitary enterprises. Time will show what February should be called…

Belarusian writers Valyaryna Kustava and Zmitser Vishnyou seem to miss summer so they suggested changing winter months’ names to summer ones.

Vіshnyou: We have discussed this weather with a friend of mine today.  The pole has already shifted by 200 kilometers. The soil will get warmer when a nuclear power station is built. England will be flooded. Everyone will stop migrating to Europe, people will be moving towards Belarus.

A bard Victar Shalkevich suggested diving the year into two parts – winter and summer.

Shalkevіch: Let it be like in that joke “This is our f…cking summer. And call it winter as soon as snow falls. Like in ancient chronicles. In the summer of 2008, in the summer of 2009…

However, ERB has found out that the literati tried in vain. According to the Republican hydremeteorological centre, the winter of 2008-2009 will be as cold as usual.
