Council of Europe to discuss situation in Belarus

The political committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe is set to discuss the situation in Belarus. The meeting of the committee will take place on February 13.
The committee is expected to appoint a special rapporteur on Belarus. On April 13, 2006 PACE held debates on the situation in Belarus following the March 19 presidential elections.

Estonian MP Andres Herkel was then appointed the rapporteur. The Assembly's resolution called on the countries that are not members of the European Union to join the sanctions imposed by Brussels against the high-ranking Belarus officials.

Last January, the speaker of the House of Representatves of he National Assembly of Belarus, Uladzimir Kanapljou said at a meeting with PACE President Rene van der Linden that Belarus was ready to begin a dialogue about its membership in the Cuncil of Europe.
