Belarusian opposition suggests alternative parliament

Беларуская апазіцыя вылучыла ідэю альтэрнатыўнага парламента

The idea to create an alternative platform – Assembly of People’s Representatives – after the parliamentary election of 2016 has appeared in the circles of the Belarusian opposition. UCP leader Anatol Lyabedzka described the idea at a meeting of the expert club at the UCP office on December 9.

"There is an idea: we will present a political ultimatum demanding to change the rules. Of course, they will not change them. We will encourage people to join the campaign and create an alternative platform – Assembly of People’s Representatives. New regional leaders conducting an active election campaign will join it,” BelaPAN quotes the politician.

The alternative platform will show people that the administration is united, Lyabedzka thinks. It will also help work out an alternative vision of Belarus’ development since the government will not agree to conduct reforms anytime soon.

The parliamentary election will be held at the beginning of September 2016. “If Lukashenka manages to get the right to appoint oppositionists to parliamentary positions, it will be his success in the country and worldwide,” the opposition politician believes. If the Belarusian President reaches an agreement with European officials in this issue, it will result in ‘a great conservation of the situation in the country and less opportunities for the adherents of reforms.”
