Belarusian Helsinki Committee marks 12th anniversary

The Belarusian Helsinki Committee human rights group is on December 1 marking its 12th anniversary, reports Belapan. The Belarusian Helsinki Committee is a full-fledged member of the International Helsinki Federation with a consultative status at the United Nations and OSCE. The committee aims to defend the human rights guaranteed by the Belarus Constitution and declared in the Helsinki agreements and other international convenants.

The Committee works to detect the facts of human rights violations and to organize various events in order to ensure that Belarus meets its international obligations in the human rights field.

The Belarusian Helsinki Committee also works to promote the human rights movement in the country's regions. In 1998, it was awarded a EU-US Democracy Award for the role it played in the development of civil society in Belarus.
