Belarus team accused of selling Euro 2008 qualifier to Bulgaria
The manager of the Belarusian national football team Yuryi Puntus comments on articles that appeared in Romanian and Bulgarian mass media and informed that the match Belarus-Bulgaria was contractual.
On Sunday Romanian mass media informed that Bulgaria national team got its Minsk victory in an unfair way. Let us remind you that the team of Yuryi Puntus demonstrated a poor performance at the “Dynama” stadium on Saturday and lost to Bulgarians 0:2.
The article published in the Romanian newspaper “ProSport” is called “Success on the quiet”. The edition draws attention to the low chances of the team from the point of view of Bulgarian bookmakers. Other countries’ chances were much higher. They also recall a well-known businessman Mihail Chorny who probably influenced the result of the match in Minsk. This article was reprinted by many influential Bulgarian mass media.
Let us remind you that the teams of Romania and Bulgaria have equal chances of getting to the European Championship. So Romanians are interested in the success of Belarusians and the defeat of Bulgarians.
The European radio for Belarus managed to phone the manager of Belarus national team Yuryi Puntus. At that moment he knew nothing about the articles in Bulgarian and Romanian mass media:
“It’s the first time I’ve heard about it. I’ve been working in club football for many years and I have always been sure of my guys. Such a thing could never happen – I’m not doing it and I won’t! I think I have brought my guys up in the same way. I think it’s just a kind of psychological pressure on our team. Taking into account we have one more match to play with Bulgaria, Romanians seem to be trying to fire us up”.
In the interview with “Salidarnast” the editor-in-chief of “Pressball” Uladzimir Berazhkou admitted that the match could have been contractual. Many things testified to it – the situation at the ground and the easiness of Bulgarians’ goals. “But you cannot prove anything without evidence”, - said Berazhkou.
The “Pressball” newspaper recalled a scandal caused by matches Belarus-Czechia and Moldavia-Belarus that took place in September 2003. The edition called the matches contractual. Our team lost both matches with “the necessary” score. The Belarusian Ministry’s department on prevention of organized outlawry and corruption started an investigation that lead to a criminal case.
