Belarus to start assembling Chinese cars

The first batch of the Chinese cars Hafei is to be assembled in Belarus by the end of 2007, Aleg Mamedau, Union Motors executive director said on Saturday in a statement. He said his company was set to start assembling the Brio model. At the first stage, vehicles would be assembled from imported united, Mamedau noted.

However, the company plans to obtaine the ST1 certificate, which will mean that the vehicles are Belarus-made. This would allow the company to export the cars to the Russian market.

The company official said they plan to launch a welding and painting facilities in Belarus for that. China is ready to invest $50-70 million into the launch of this production line.

The government is expected soon to allocate land for the construction of the new assembly plant. 


However Brio is a small-class vehicle, it can comfortably accommodate 5 people.

The vehicle is powered by 1.0-liter or 1.1-liter engines and designed by the famous Italian firm Pininfarina, reports Interfax.
