Belarus plans to cancel ‘propiska’

The so-called ‘propiska’, or the rudimental stamp in the passport, approving the residence at a certain address, is to be cancelled within the next two years, Belarus Interior Minister Uladzimir Navumau told reporters at the National Press Center.

Propiska will be replaced by a simple registration, he said. The parliament is expected to finalize the relevant draft legislation in February.

The Minister also noted that it was not his law-enforcement agency, but the other agencies, interested in tracking the citizens’ residence addresses, that spearheaded the decision.

In particular, the issue was raised many times by the organizations that provide communal services, reports BELTA news agency.
