Belarus-language professors get awards in Minsk

Diplomas of the first laureates of the Vaclau Lastouski Prize were handed out to the Belarusian-language university professors. The prize was founded in March 2007 by several NGOs, including the Belarusian Language Society and the Union of Belarusian Diasporas.

A solemn ceremony took place on Saturday in the framework of the forum of pro-democracy teachers.

Belarus's People's Poet Nil Gilevich presented the diplomas to Tamara Sukhaja, the dean of the mathematics faculty at the Belarusian National Technical University, Alexander Artisheuski, a professor from the Medical University and Pavel Kauryga, geography professor from the Belarus State University.

Apart from the diplomas, the winners also received a volume of publicist works written by Nil Gilevich over the past ten years.

14 candidates were short-listed for the award.

The winners were selected by an international committee for teaching the disciplines that were not tought in the Belarusian previously and for their active civil positions, reports Belapan.
