The
Belarusian government would like to acquire a controlling stake in Kalija
Parks, a company that owns a Ventspils Port terminal, Regnum quoted Uladzimir
Syamashka, Belarus' first deputy prime minister, as saying at a recent
Belarusian-Latvian investment forum held in Minsk. Syamashka reportedly
discussed a possible deal with Latvia's
Economy Minister Kaspar Gerhards. Syamashka expressed concern about a decrease in
transits of Belarusian potash fertilizers via Latvia. "Three years before we
transshipped about 3.8 million tons a year via the Port of Ventspils,
while in the first nine months of this year only 900,000 tons was shipped. It
will be a total of1.2 to 1.3 million tons this year," he said.
Syamashka
blamed the decrease on high rates set by Latvijas dzelzceļš.
