Belarus expects 'compensation' from Russia for recognition of Abkhazia, South Ossetia

"We can raise a question whether Belarus (on the one side) is prepared for possible consequences, and whether Russia (on the other side) is ready to compensate for those consequences", Belarusian lawmaker Viktar Huminski commented to the Interfax news agency when asked about the recognition of Georgia's breakaway republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
The European Radio for Belarus asked Viktar Huminski what compensation or consequences he had in mind. He said: "I am talking about the problematic issues between Belarus and Russia. These issues are various and well known; the issues of gas, trade, oil custom duties, etc".

If Belarus recognizes these two republics, the European Union might introduce some sanctions against Belarus, the lawmaker did not rule out. However, he would not elaborate on what kind of sanctions might follow.
