Belarus accounts for 3% on EU sex worker list

Romania has overtaken Russia as the top country of origin of migrant sex workers in the EU, a survey of prostituion across the EU has found, reports ВВС. In 2009, the top three were Romania (12%), Russia (9%), Bulgaria, followed by Nigeria and Ukraine (7% each) and a large group of coluntries with 3-4%: Belarus, Moldova, Hungary, Poland, Baltic states and others.

EU-funded Tampep collects data from welfare groups and public health bodies that monitor and help prostitutes. Tampep's data collection is part of an effort to curb the spread of HIV/Aids and other sexually transmitted deseases.

According to the survey, Central and Eastern Europe account for around 70% of migrant sex workers in the 27-nation EU.
