Authorities ban pickets in support of Kozulin

Authorities in the capital Minsk and the western city of Hrodna rejected applications from local activists to stage pickets in support of Alexander Kozulin, the imprisoned former presidential contender.

The application to stage a picket at the Bangalore Square, the traditional site for opposition actions, was filed by Anatol Sidarevich, the deputy chairman of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Hramada).

But the Minsk City Hall rejected his application on the grounds that the site was being prepared for the celebrations devoted to the 940th anniversary of Minsk.

In Hrodna, the local authorities also banned a picket in support of Alexander Kozulin. The regional branch of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Hramada) was denied permission on the grounds that street actions were allegedly not permitted at the requested site near the Palace of Textile Workers, according to the press office of the United Civil Party.
