Alexievich to speak about Square-2010 at Nobel lecture

У Нобелеўскай лекцыі Алексіевіч раскажа пра Плошчу-2010

Svetlana Alexievich has uncovered some details of her Nobel lecture. She will speak about modern Belarus, the writer told Radio Liberty.

"I will tell people how children (although there were elderly people too) came to the square and tried protesting. The transition time is long. We cannot get freedom as simply as we imagined it in the 1990s. It will probably take a long time,” the writer said.

Alexievich wrote an open letter to Alyaksandr Lukashenka after the brutal dispersal of the Square in 2010. She urged the Belarusian leader to be merciful and stop the repressions. However, he did not reply to the letter.

The Belarusian writer will also touch upon the topic dating back to 40 years ago in her Nobel lecture – the story of ‘a red man’ brought up in the USSR.
