Statkevich for President nomination group formed

The United Civil Party has formed an action group to nominate political prisoner Mikola Statkevich as presidential candidate in this election. On Tuesday, at a press conference, chairman of the party Anatol Lyabedzka said:

"Dozens of VIPs, famous, influential people show by example that you have to fight for freedom, free elections ... This is a group of solidarity with political prisoners, not only with Mikola Statkevich."

Lyabedzka said that the initiative group was also joined by Professor Stanislau Bogdanovich, Leu Margolin, Victar Karnyaienka, Antanina Kavalyova, director Yury Khashchavatsky, human rights activist Harry Pahanyaila, People's Artist of Belarus Zinaida Bandarenka, a group of the Supreme Soviet of the 13th convocation deputies. UCP leader believes that the actions of the group can help release Statkevich.

Mikalai Statkevich was a presidential candidate in the 2010 presidential elections. He was arrested on election day, and in 2011 was sentenced to six years in prison on charges of organizing the riots. The 58-year-old politician is serving a sentence in Magiliou.
