2013: No executions in Belarus

People were executed in 22 countries in 2013 – one more than in 2012. Executions were resumed in Indonesia, Kuwait, Nigeria and Vietnam, Radio Liberty reports.

No one was executed in Gambia, the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan. The number of countries practicing the death penalty has decreased from 37 20 years ago to 22 in 2013. Europe has become a zone free from executions for the first time since 2009. No one was executed in Belarus, the only European country still practicing the death penalty, in 2013.
