154,000 apartments in Belarus have no water meters

Nearly 154,000 apartments in Belarus are not equipped with water meters, Anatol Shahun from the Ministry of Housing and Utilities said in a statement. Owners will be encouraged to install meters using economic measures. He reminded that effective from May 1, 2009 households without water meters would be charged fees that are 2.5-time higher up to Br1544 per one cubic meter against current Br628 per one cubic meter.

Over the past two years, 62 percent of the country's population (or 1.6 million apartments) have installed water meters. The government and the population have saved around Br30 billion and around 77 million kW/hour of electricity, reports Belapan.
