VELCOM buys out controlling shares from the state?

The Cyprus-based company SB-Telecom, a co-founder of the joint venture VELCOM, has acquired a packet of shares that belongs to the Belarusian state, reliable sources close to the situation reveal. The company has so far avoided comments to the press.
Experts suggest that the sale by the government of this asset could be associated with the need to pay off gas debts to Russia.

On May 24, Belarus president Alexander Lukashenka met with SB-Telecom CEO Ede Smavi to discuss the Cyprus company's participation in the construction of a first-class hotel in Minsk.

Samavi expressed interest in investing into the reconstruction of re-tooling of cement factories in Belarus. Earlier, on April 12 Lukashenka told a news conference with the editors of the Belarusian media that he was studying a proposal to sell the state-owned shares in VELCOM, the leading mobile communication operator.

Lukashenka also announced then that $300-400 million were offered for the package of shares of the cell operator.
