US State Department: Belarus sanctions could be lifted

The United States considers a possibility to lift sanctions against Belarus, if official Minsk makes steps towards political reforms, US State Department spokesman Robert Wood said in a statement.
US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State David Merkel, who visited Minsk last week, said that decisions on the sanctions would be taken after the parliamentary elections in September, reports Radio Svaboda.

Belarus leader Alexander Lukashenka earlier today said there were steps forward from US and EU in order to normalize relations with Belarus.

"In respond to Belarus's candid desire to normalize relations with the West and to our concrete steps, neither EU nor US were rushing with adequate measures", Lukashenka said when making appointments in the country's security agencies.
