Ruined church returns to Roman Catholics

The authorities in Kamianets have approved the transfer of the ruined cathedral in the village of Vouchyn to the Roman Catholic Churh in Belarus. The 300-year-old cathedral is associated with Stanislaw August Poniatowski, the last King of Poland. The future king was baptized in Vouchyn. His remains were brought there from Leningrad between the world wars. In the Soviet times, the cathedral was robbed and ruined. Stanislaw August's grave was also destroyed.

According to unconfirmed reports, an unidentified local resident secretly reburried the remains of Stanislaw August Pomiatowski near the village cemetry in Vouchyn shortly after the World War II.

The Roman Catholic Churh is to restore the cathedral and to open a new parish there.
